What is a FasTrak CAV toll tag?

The FasTrak Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) toll tag is only issued to and can only be used by eligible clean air vehicles. This special toll tag communicates to roadside toll equipment that the car is eligible for toll free or discounted travel in Bay Area Express Lanes. The FasTrak CAV toll tag is required for eligible clean air vehicles traveling in the I-880, I-680 Contra Costa and SR-237 express lanes but may be used at any FasTrak toll location. Eligible clean air vehicles can use a FasTrak Flex toll tag to pay for bridge tolls and to travel toll free in the other Bay Area Express Lanes.

The FasTrak CAV toll tag may be ordered online and a valid DMV-issued clean air decal certificate is required. A FasTrak CAV toll tag may only be used in the car to which it is registered. Eligibility for discounts will automatically expire when the CAV decal expires. Learn more about the FasTrak CAV toll tag.

I have a hybrid vehicle with the YELLOW Clean Air Stickers. Can I drive in the designated HOV/carpool-only lane even if I am driving by myself?

No. Effective July 1, 2011, the YELLOW clean air stickers issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) have expired. You are no longer qualified to drive in a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane (also called a "carpool lane") as a solo driver. Drivers using an HOV/carpool lane without the required number of passengers may be cited by law enforcement.

I have a qualifying clean air vehicle with proper Clean Air Decals. Can I drive in the designated HOV/carpool-only lane even if I am driving across the bridge by myself?

State-Owned Toll Bridges

Clean air vehicles displaying orange, purple, or red clean air decals issued by the DMV can use dedicated HOV/carpool lanes in the Bay Area during designated carpool hours no matter how many people are in the vehicle.

Like all other carpool vehicles, single-occupant clean air vehicles must pay tolls using a FasTrak toll tag (Standard, FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV) when driving across the Bay Area toll bridges in an HOV/carpool lane.

Golden Gate Bridge

No. To use the HOV/carpool lane, you must have the minimum passenger requirements for carpools. Drivers caught using an HOV lane without the required number of passengers may be cited by law enforcement.

I am in a qualifying clean air vehicle and I have the required number of occupants to qualify as a carpool vehicle. Do I still have to pay tolls when driving across a toll bridge?

Yes. Even if you have the required number of occupants in your clean air vehicle to qualify as a carpool vehicle (either two or three, depending on the carpool policies of the bridge you are crossing), you must still pay a toll. However, like all other high-occupancy vehicles, you qualify for a discounted carpool toll rate of $3.50 on all state-owned toll bridges and $6.75 on the Golden Gate Bridge.

I have a FasTrak CAV toll tag but my clean air vehicle decals have expired. What do I do?

You are no longer eligible for clean air vehicle discounts. Your FasTrak CAV toll tag now works as a FasTrak Flex toll tag. You do not need to exchange your toll tag.

When using express lanes, continue to set the switch on the face of the tag to match the number of occupants in the vehicle.
