What are the penalties and late fees for a Notice of Toll Evasion?

Failure to pay the established bridge or express lane toll is a violation of California's toll evasion statutes. Toll evasion violations will be enforced. If you drive through a toll location prior to January 2021 without a valid FasTrak toll tag or without paying the toll, you will receive a notice of toll evasion. An image of your license plate will be captured, and a violation notice will be sent to the vehicle's registered owner at the address on file with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 21 days of the toll violation.

Failure to pay the second notice may result in additional penalties and fees and withholding of your vehicle registration by the DMV and/or a referral to a collections agency.

Failure to pay the second notice may result in additional penalties and fees and withholding of your vehicle registration by the DMV and/or a referral to a collections agency.

You may resolve your violation online by paying the balance due using a credit card, or you can submit a dispute. To pay your violation by check, please follow the instructions described on the violation notice. To pay your violation with cash, visit one of our cash payment locations or the in-person counter at the FasTrak Customer Service Center during normal hours of operation.

How do I pay my violation penalty?
I am not a FasTrak account holder and I used the FasTrak toll lane without paying the toll. Will I receive a violation notice?

If you drove in an express lane, yes. An image of the license plate was captured and a violation notice will be mailed to the vehicle's registered owner at the address on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 21 days of the violation.

If you crossed a toll bridge, no. All Bay Area bridges use automatic tolling. An image of the license plate was captured and an invoice will be mailed to the vehicle's registered owner at the address on file with the DMV. The invoice will only be for the amount of the toll. If the invoice is not paid by its due date, you will receive a violation notice.

I am not a FasTrak account holder. Why do I receive an invoice when I cross the Golden Gate Bridge without stopping, but a toll violation notice when I cross any of the other Bay Area toll bridges prior to January 2021 without stopping?

The Golden Gate Bridge uses an invoice system to charge tolls to drivers who were not paying with FasTrak, a License Plate Account, or a One-Time Payment. As of January 2021, state-owned bridges will use an invoice system and drivers will receive an invoice if they do not pay with a FasTrak toll tag, a License Plate Account, or a One-Time Payment.

The best way to avoid violations is to sign up for a FasTrak account. FasTrak users also receive discounts on Golden Gate Bridge tolls.

I have a FasTrak toll tag, but I still received a violation notice in the mail. Why did this happen?

There are several reasons that could explain why you received a violation:

I qualify as a carpool on the I-880, I-580, I-680 Contra Costa or SR-237 express lanes. Why did I receive a violation notice for my carpool trip?

For carpools, motorcycles, and other eligible vehicles to receive discounted travel in the I-880, I-580, I-680 Contra Costa and SR-237, your FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag must be set to the proper position and associated with a valid FasTrak account.

You can order a FasTrak Flex toll tag online via the account enrollment process. Learn more about the FasTrak CAV toll tag. To find a retail location near you to pick up a FasTrak Flex toll tag, visit the Get FasTrak page. We recommend that you call ahead to make sure that FasTrak Flex toll tags are in stock.

NOTE: Solo drivers in eligible clean air vehicles do not qualify as a carpool in the I-880, I-680 Contra Costa and SR-237 express lanes. To receive a discounted toll, you must use a FasTrak CAV toll tag. Single-occupant CAVs using a FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV set in position 2 or 3+ may be cited by CHP.
