Using your FasTrak Toll Tag

What are the switch positions on a FasTrak Flex and FasTrak Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) toll tag for?

The toll tag switch positions are used to tell the toll system the number of occupants in the vehicle so that the correct toll amount is collected.

The switch positions also assist with California Highway Patrol (CHP) enforcement of express lane use.

FasTrak Flex Toll Tag for Clean Air Vehicles is a white plastic transponder with a yellow CAV sticker on the lower right corner. The switch in the middle of the transponder can be used to indicate how many people are in the vehicle before driving.

Carpools, motorcycles, and other carpool-qualifying vehicles with FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tags set to the appropriate setting (1, 2, or 3+) may get discounted or free tolls in Bay Area Express Lanes or carpool lanes (2-seater vehicles carrying two people and motorcycles should set the switch to position 3+). You can find a list of all FasTrak toll locations and their carpool and CAV requirements on our Toll Locations page, or see the tables below.

Remember to set the switch prior to starting your trip.

I already have a FasTrak toll tag. Do I need to exchange it for a FasTrak Flex toll tag?

You need a FasTrak Flex toll tag to receive discounts or travel for free on bridges and in Bay Area Express Lanes if you are a carpool, vanpool, motorcycle or other carpool-qualifying vehicle.

Otherwise, your Standard toll tag will work on all express lanes as well as all other FasTrak facilities, but you will pay the full toll price.

Learn how to exchange your Standard toll tag for a FasTrak Flex toll tag in the FasTrak Toll Tag Guide.
